Group Irlandia yang di juluki Band 80 an ini didirikan di Dublin pada tahun 1976. Pertama kali mereka di bentuk ketika salah satu dari personel mereka yaitu Larry Mullen mencari anggota baru di salah satu majalah dinding SMA yang bertujuan untuk membentuk band baru. Ketika itu juga mereka mendapatkan personel dan akhirnya dibentuklah nama band tersebut "Feedback". Lalu pada tahun 1977 mereka berganti nama kembali menjadi "The Hype" yang beranggotakan

Bono atau Paul David Hewson pada Vokal dan Gitar
The Edge atau Dave Howell Evans pada Gitar, keyboards, vokal
Adam Clayton pada Bass dan Gitar
Larry Mullen. Jr pada Drum, perkusi, vokal

Pada tahun 1977 group ini ditinggalkan Dick evans dan akhirnya mereka berganti nama lagi menjadi U2.

U2 akhirnya merilis album "Boy" pada tahun 1980 yang di prakarsai oleh Chris Blackwell pada payung Island Records dan mendapatkan sukses yang gemilang. Sukses nya karena album tersebut adalah dinilai sebagai karya yang sangat cocok dengan anak muda.
Identitas musiknya sangat jelas ketika mereka mengeluarkan album "War" dan di lagu nya Sunday, Bloody Sunday yang membahas mengenai kekerasan di Irlandia Utara dan bahkan di cap sebagai band Idealistis dan Politis.

Setelah sukses menguasai Inggris, akhirnya mereka menjelajah ke Amerika. Di Amerika pun mereka berjaya dan setiap tour yang di lakukan pasti sukses dan tiket yang dijual sangat laris. Akhirnya majalah The Rolling Stones menjuluki mereka atau U2 adalah Band 1980 an. Fans mereka yang berkiblat Rock and Roll semakin banyak dan U2 pada saat itu dianggap band yang paling berpengaruh dan penting.

Ketika Album "Joshua Tree" dirilis, mereka kembali meraih sukses. Album tersebut di rilis pada tahun 1987 dan sempat merajai daftar album terlaris di Inggris dan kemudian merambah ke Amerika dan bertahan hingga sembilan pekan. Fantastis. Inilah kehormatan yang di dapat band lain yaitu The Beatles dan The Who yang nanti saya akan bahas di postingan berikutnya.
Sekarang, hampir 30 tahun kemudian musiknya masih berjaya dan masih berpengaruh di dunia dan mendapat banyak pengahargaan termasuk 22 buah Grammy Awards.
